Donald Trump<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\nMr Rudd, who it\u2019s believed earns up to $400,000 per year for being the country\u2019s representative in America, while also continuing to bank half of his parliamentary pension, is no fan of the Republican.<\/p>\n
Over the years, he has regularly hurled insults at Mr Trump via his account on X, formerly Twitter.<\/p>\n
At various points, Mr Rudd has described him as everything from a \u201ctraitor to the west\u201d and a \u201cproblem for the world\u201d.
\nThe most scathing attack came in June 2020 when he slammed Mr Trump for being \u201cthe most destructive president in history\u201d.
\n\u201cHe drags America and democracy through the mud,\u201d Mr Rudd wrote on X. \u201cHe thrives on fomenting, not healing, division. He abuses Christianity, church and bible to justify violence. All aided and abetted by [Rupert] Murdoch\u2019s FoxNews (sic) network in America which feeds this.\u201d
\nBut now, as the Australian Government comes to terms with how its working relationship with its most crucial and important ally might evolves, those remarks have all vanished.
\nMr Rudd\u2019s digital housekeeping appears to have come too late.
\nLara Trump, the president-elect\u2019s daughter-in-law and head of the Republic National Committee, described him as \u201cnasty\u201d in an interview with Sky News.
\n\u201cMaybe we want to choose somebody else,\u201d Ms Trump said of his role as ambassador.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s kind of hard to have a position like that where you\u2019d want to keep someone who said such nasty things about a person.
\n\u201cI do think it would be nice to have a person who appreciates all that Donald Trump has gone through to want to serve our country at this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
And back in March, the man himself vowed that Mr Rudd \u201cwon\u2019t be there long\u201d should he win the campaign.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know much about him,\u201d he said in an interview with GB News in the UK when read some of those X posts.<\/p>\n
\u201cI heard he was a little bit nasty. I hear he\u2019s not the brightest bulb. But I don\u2019t know much about him. But if he\u2019s at all hostile, he will not be there long.\u201d<\/p>\n
After his delete spree was exposed today, Mr Rudd\u2019s private office issued a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cOut of respect for the office of President of the United States, and following the election of President Trump, Ambassador Rudd has now removed these past commentaries from his personal website and social media channels,\u201d it read.<\/p>\n
He did so to \u201celiminate the possibility of such comments being misconstrued as reflecting his positions as ambassador and, by extension, the views of the Australian Government\u201d.<\/p>\n
Elly Lawson, the deputy secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, told The Australian that the insults were made when Mr Rudd ran a US think-tank in New York and before he was appointed ambassador.<\/p>\n
But Liberal Senator Simon Birmingham, the opposition\u2019s spokesman on foreign affairs, has called for the PM to recall Mr Rudd.<\/p>\n
Dennis Richardson, a former Australian ambassador to the US, today warned against \u201chitting the panic button.<\/p>\n
In an interview with the Australian Financial Review<\/i>, Mr Richardson said: \u201cAnyone who seeks to undermine the Australian ambassador obviously puts personal feelings and perceived political advantage ahead of the national interest and national security.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn fact, they don\u2019t know how to spell the words \u2018national security\u2019 and \u2018national interest\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
Foreign Minister Penny Wong insisted Mr Rudd was doing \u201can excellent job\u201d and she\u2019s \u201cconfident\u201d he will continue to do so.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter whether you\u2019re Liberal, Labor, Green, whatever \u2013 Australia first,\u201d Senator Wong told ABC Radio.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd that\u2019s certainly the approach I hope political leaders will take in relation to backing in our ambassador and the government as we engage with the new administration.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Rudd\u2019s position is likely safe for now, given a number of government figures have been equally scathing of Mr Trump in the past \u2013 including Mr Albanese.
\nAfter Joe Biden\u2019s victory in 2020, the PM described the removal of Mr Trump from the White House as a \u201ctriumph of hope over fear\u201d.
\nThat remark came three years after the then-opposition MP revealed the president \u201cscares the s*** out of me\u201d.
\nMr Albanese told reporters today that he wouldn\u2019t apologise for those comments.
\nOthers within Labor ranks have previously dubbed Mr Trump \u201ca big baby\u201d, a \u201closer\u201d, and \u201cmad\u201d.
\nIn a statement released late yesterday, Mr Albanese insisted Australia\u2019s alliance with the US \u201chas always been bigger than individuals\u201d.
\n\u201cIt has stood tall through generations of governments from both sides of the aisle and we will work together as allies,\u201d he said.
\nOpposition leader Peter Dutton called for Mr Rudd to now work \u201cday and night\u201d to build links with Mr Trump that \u201cdeepen relationships and start new ones\u201d.
\nFor his part, Mr Rudd took to X overnight to offer his congratulations and say he \u201clooks forward to working closely with President Trump and his administration on the challenges and opportunities that our two great democracies \u2026 face in the years ahead\u201d.<\/p>\n
